For most patients who suffer from acid reflux, the most common surgical operation to resolve the problem is fundoplication. This procedure accomplishes two things:

To prevent acid reflux by increasing LES pressure.

To fix any current presence of hiatal hernia.

There are two basic appraoaches to this operation:

Open Nissen fundoplication

Laparoscopic fundoplication

Overall, both operations result in the same thing over the long term. Various studies have reported as high 90 % of patients or higher are completely free of heatburn after the operation and are pleased with their decision, even years down the road. The operations also were found to resolve other symptoms of acid reflux in 85 % of patients, such as acid reflux related coughing.
